| 1) Base timing was way too advanced ~20-25 deg. I have no idea how it migrated to that as I had checked it and double checked it after I did a lot of the initial maintenance after I bought the car. 2) Plugs are correct part # and were gapped at the factory .044 So I went ahead and went through the process by the FSM to reset the timing to 15 deg. One key point that I may have made an error previously was to disconnect the TPS harness while setting it. Went ahead and followed on to set the base idle settings at 750 rpm (slightly lower with the IAA disconnected per Robo's links). Also checked the O2 sensors per the manual and all is good there. Pulled plugs, re-gapped to .035 and also did a compression test. All cylinders came up with 165-170 with a somewhat old and semi leaky gauge (circa '67 GTO days from my dad). Took it for a drive and no detonation, pinging etc. Man these cars accelerate! My wife kept telling me her stomach felt like a roller coaster. It was still fast before, but just amazing every time. Side note: the Autozone rental compression gauge is worthless as the fitting just spins and won't get tight enough. I could only get a reading of 90 with it.
